I have been a Freelance 2D/3D Artist for the past 9 years. For the youngsters coming up who want to get
in the BIG CHAIR on a Discret Logic system, I have the
following advice:
Master 2D layout ( If you can create a layout as good or
better than a nice Print Ad in ID, Wired or that type of
magazine, that's the first step.)
Translate those 2d skills into a compositing package, like
After Effects, Combustion, Shake, etc. If you can achieve
Print Ad quality motion graphics design, with an eye to
the bleeding edge look, the clients will be lining up to hire you (Regardless of what PACKAGE you used).
The bottom line: Discreet Logic and the Post community
has made it very difficult for you to gain access to their
little world. Don't take it personally if the pointy-headed
nimrods freeze you out. Discreet is notorious for its GOTHIC business practices, designed to keep the pool
of talent small, and their systems prices high.
The final analysis: Discreet's systems are based on
SGI's UNIX systems, while the whole world is zipping
along on Intel boxes, now at 3 gigahertz. It is only a matter of time before someone comes along and makes
a more compeditive product and Discreet's Spensive
Slooow SGI systems go the way of the DODO.
However, if you have a SOLID background in DESIGN,
it doesn't really matter what package you use, right?
