Softimage 3d & xsi

I'm trying to find out which 3d package to start off with, and am a little confused to the difference between softimage 3d and softimage xsi. Are they simply different versions of the same software (ie. windows 2000, windows XP) or is xsi geared more towards animation... i've gotten it narrowed down to si & maya (s&m) and would really love this si confusion solved.

thanks so much

You 've got the idea. That's the different between 3D and XSI. But it is more like win3.1 to win 95. Change a lot, the interface has changed. XSI is more userfriendly. You should start with XSI. Today 3D industry, XSI 1.5.3 is way better than Maya4. A Maya use told me that.

Softimage|XSI is the replacement for Softimage|3D. Softimage|3D will hang around for a while, but it's days are numbered.

Obj, why dont you read what Speye was saying PROPERLY.
Im pretty sure Speye is not negative about Softimage Co. at all.

He is saying that Softimage3D THE APPLICATION has it's
day's numbered - because XSI is a next generation app which
makes Maya look like a dirty old rag.
