Does any one have experinces of using Softimage 3.9 in ITANIUM(P4 xeon)?
thx
The p4 xeon and the itanium aren't the same thing. the xeon is a 32 bit CPU based on "ia32" the Itanium is a 64 bit CPU based on the ia64 arch. Theres not too much OS support yet for itanium. Any 32 bit software will run considerably slower on the chip since itsrunning in emulation mode. That and an itanium clockspeed is typically around 700-800mhz on average.

are there any plans of releasing either XSI or maya on an itanium say....XP 64 bit edition platform? seems like it wouldnt be that hard, both programs exsist in 64 bit on irix.
Alias|wavefront already (supposedly) has Maya alpha code running @ 64bits on 64bit Windows and Itanium hardware.
They were among the first digital media development company to announce support for 64-bit wintel.

Mental ray has already been ported to Itanium, and I think Houdini as well.
What kind of performance can we expect from the IA-64 architecture in terms of rendering speed and 3d interactivity? I've used SGI machines, but they were old O2's. Obviously the ability to address huge amonts of ram won't hurt, but what kind of real world speed increase will 64-bit computig bring to wintel platforms?

No clue really, but I remember seeing a floating point benchmark and it outperformed an Alpha, so that might give you somewhat of an idea. Then again Athlons have good fp performance too, and are much much cheaper. Also AMD doesn't seem to be having any problems increasing the clock speeds on their chips, unlike the trouble Intel is having with Itanium. I don't think too many people are gonna jump on Itanium for doing 3d until the prices have come way, way down.
In terms of actual operational performance, don't expect any huge increases just because your on a 64-bit machine.
discreet advanced systems (flame, smoke, inferno, fire, etc) are all compiled @ 32-bit wide code paths. They are essentially 32-bit apps running on 64-bit machines.
-Seems discreet would have written a 64-bit app if there were any real significant performance benefits.
...but in terms of forthcoming 64-bit 2.5D/3D apps ......
You will probably see a more marked performace increase at higher resolutions, but also general all-around performance boost simply because of a more advanced and powerful Intel chip.

Back in 1997 before everybody else jumped on board, both MicroSoft and Softimage made the announcement that they would support Merced (aka Itanium). Given the fact XSI makes heavy use of windows components, I'd imagine it should run fine on 64bit windows.
As far as SI3D is concerned, it should work just fine on the P4. I'm not sure about Itanium. XSI will run on both.
actually, Intel Xeons are i686, not ia32
