In 8.5 it appears you can only start a vertice on one edge and then place the end vertice on another edge. Is there anyway to make in function like it did in earlier versions or is there a new tool I need to use?
Umm i'm quite sure it was never actually possible not to start on a edge and ending on one, ok rolling back to maya 6.0. Nope not possible. If you want i can take out my backup machine i think it goes as far back as 3.0 but im pretty sure you must actually start and ed on a edge on ALL maya versions. However you can have as many points in between as you like, thus you can cut in around and back out.
just double click on the tool and unchek split only form edges
Anyway usually what you do is you use the split tool as a secondary stage and create the first shape with create/append polygon tool.
The tool is allmost identical to the one in 6.0 and now that i tested also in 4.0
