If you have an older box, there were some problems (3 or 4 years ago) running the server when some systems were taken off line. All networking on some boxes shuts down if there is no connection to network. To solve this, users could load the software adapter off the Windows CD. Just go to networking and load adapter, put the CD and search for the software adapter. Use any IP address, because it does not get used.
The software adapter acts like there is a hardware adapter running in the system. This solved the problem, if the system was not going to be on-line or had no physical adapater installed. It was not a problem either if the system is going to be plugged back into the network, because the software adapter does not get used if a hardware one is active.
Again, this was a problem a while back, but perhaps some board manufacturers still turn off networking, if un-plugged. Worth a shot.
