Square Pixels

Hello,

I'm using a dv sequence (24fps progressive) as a source, but am running hires processes that are replacing the original footage.

I'm doing some of the processes in Studio Artist then doing additional
stuff on top in Shake.

This is going to be rendered out film res. I need to be sure that the result is rendered out with square pixels. I checked the manual and am pretty sure
the default settings will do this but I wasn't clear if this was absolutely the
case.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Catherine

Film doesn't have "non-square" pixels...

Anyway, if you're afraid of maintaining your aspect ratio, just make sure that DefaultAspect and DefaultViewerAspectRatio are set to 1 in your globals.

Hello,

Thanks for your response.

I realize that film has square pixels, but I started with a video
source and was told to deliver images with square pixels.

OK, then you should know how was your video footage capture and exported to you.

As a rule of thumb, though, you could do the following:

  • if your footage is PAL 768x576 pixels, leave it as is, since it's already square pixel
  • If it's PAL 720x576 px, you should make it fit into 768x576.
  • For NTSC, if it's 720x540 or 720x534(DV), leave it as is.
  • For NTSC 720x486, fit it into 720x540
  • For NTSC 720x480(DV), fit it into 720x534.

That should cover all situations for non-anamorphic footage, if the footage has been delivered without any transformation (scaling, cropping...)

Hope that helps.

wow! thanks for this!
