Starting Up

Hello!
a while ago i started testing various 3d rendering apps. For some reason I chose MAYA.
I am trying to put together my own 3d film, but I am a complete newbie to all of this.

Can someone help me with the following :
What is the best 3d app out?
If I want to make a film of sorts and render, build, etc all the elements which is the best to use?

At home now I'm thinking of the following setup :
Poser 6 for my characters
Vue 5 Infinite for my enviroments,
Not sure what to use for vehicles
What about wind, rain, explosions...all that....
What plugins should I look out for?

What would be the best software to buy and for what?

Please help? i simply need a list of what I would need to get going?
I'm worried I'm moving in the wrong direction....

second to this where is the best place for tutorials? Be it free or for purchase?
Best place to buy models?

Thanks so much for your help guys!

cheers!

Best sis not a measureable metric. Soo one cant say whats best. Se itas a optimisation issue. Soem are better at cetain things others are better at other things.

well if yoru PAYING or the apps then get maya, xsi or max and do everything in them! its easier on you.

Anyway id say your in for a bout 2 to 3 years of work. i mena on the average each ssecond of animation takes about 1 hour to produce in materfull hands, so a 10 minute shot takes about 75 workdays to complete... ONce you know exactly what your doing. Actualy it has a tenddency to speed up a bit in teh pure animation phase.

Again best is not measuered but for education amterais get the gnomon vvids thay atre expensive tough.... bUt it all depends on your budget. I eman you can easily dish out 10,000 eurois on this and be no closer to the end. But it all deepends a bit on your personal productivity.

Anyway the programs arent all that expensive even the maxs 7000$ pricetag is small peaches compared to the amount of money goes into rendering and teaching yourself the basics.

err... for the first film it's wise to keep it under 1 minute and skip all that "vehicles", "environments" and "explosions" stuff. There's enough sweat waiting for you with "big cube tries to smash small cube but small cube escapes and starts to humiliate the big cube in a witty ways" type of film. You'll be sincerely congratulating yourself if you manage to produce something like that - from storyboard to dvd.

I agree. Its amazing how much it takes to do anything as a complete project on your own. Its downright shocking. Someone learning maya and spending a year or so perfecting his/her use of 3d would be really well off to have completed maybe a few models, some textures, and some nice renderings in that time. To complete a full project is just unmanagable for most who take up that task.
