Still Life

Looking for feedback, positive or negative.
Plus, are there any restrictions to using labels? If you used a company logo for a picture (for non-commercial), and they found out who you are, can they come after you?

thanks for your time...

Only if you try to make money off of it. When it comes to demoreels, it's a gray area. Depending on the company, they may consider this an attempt to capitolize on their trademark. Since it's just a texture, i would definately change it. If it were a model of Batman or something, I wouldn't be too worried about it (just so long as you don't have the batman theme song playing in the background, unless of course, you paid for the rights)
To tell you the truth, I'd personalize the label. It could show of your artistic skills and perhaps flash your name yet again on your demo-reel. (that sort of thing is quite important. I have friends who'd go so far as to put their names on street signs in the backgrounds of their animations)

Just a suggestion.

Yesh change the label to say Ebolla

im thinkin the BG pict looks pixelated.....

hahahahahahaha

Hi there!

I agree, you shouldn't get in trouble for using a licensed image/label/character, as long as you can call it "art" (freedom of speech etc.) and not make money off it. But yeah, I would use every opportunity to exploit your own name and creativity - the label could easily be part of that.

Anyway - about the still-life:
Fairly nice composition. I agree, I can see pixels in your background watercolour image - Unfortunately, it brings me out of the illusion of reality, back into digital. Easy to fix though, I'm sure. The grapes are probably my favorite part - quite pretty- a tiny bit of translucense would really add to the effect. I would maybe turn the bottle slightly, so we can see where the side of the label ends - it's just more interesting than a straight-on view. The green glass on the bottle could also be more translucent, and shiny. I think the apple might need a bit of asymmetry and lumpyness - it's just a bit too even & perfect right now - and to help it look more natural, you might want to remove some of the black from its apple-peel texture.

Just a few thoughts. Hope you enjoy still-life!

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm finding myself doing 2-3 pieces at a time. Once I get back to this one, I'll include your feedback and present again.

hey man,

specular. your grapes, bottle and apple need some sort of specular treatment. right now they look a bit matte to me.

I agree that you should alter the lable. Or better yet use it as a launch pad for something entirely your own. If it's going in a demo reel or a portfolio, employers like it if you create your own textures as well as models/animation/etc. If you'd like to keep the lable the best and safest way to go about it would be to contact the company and request permission to use it.

As for the piece itself I like what you've done. The composition works for me. I would like to see some transparancy. The bottle dosn't quite look like glass, the wine glass beside it is better. To me the bottle has more of a plastic feel to it right now. Other then that I'd say that you are well on your way to a beautiful piece.

hi.
Composition is nice ( but a bit classical, can't we play more with rules? ).
If you're looking for photoreal picture in the end, materials still needs some work but suggestions before were sharp enough.

My problem is the lighting of the scene.
The main soft light from the left works pretty ok, but what we need here is an soft oposite lighting. The right side of both bottle and apple are too dark. You need a thin line of light to separate the scene from the background ( as your background is clean&clear, you have to take it into consideration when you work on the lights).
Although you research a terrific "chiaroscuro" , it always looks better with a soft opposite light, it gaves roundness to shapes.
And to finish, the specular of the bottle has to be as clear and sharp as the glass (or it's really really dusty). Then, why not try the same trick on the grappes' specular, and the apple?
good work anyway.
You said you were working on different projects, what is the nature of the others?
thanks for sharing
see ya

The nature of the others are again still lifes (or lives, as the case may be).
As this point, I'm attempting to keep it as simple as possible, so as to build a strong foundation. I was first trying to make spaceships flying around some crazy planet. They were fun to make, though looked pretty cheezy! So, now I'm starting from the ground up.
Again, these suggestions are real beneficial. (Except the comment about the background. I thought that was the best part)!

those grapes could really use SSS

Could really use what?

Sub Surface Scattering, a shader that makes stuff translucent (such as grapes really are), you can find it on this site.

The bottle really kills the still IMO, the glass next to it works, but the bottle doesn't because you did it all as one texture. I did a pint of Guiness (you can find it on me webby), after trying multi texturing and all, I just gave up and added the label on extra geometry, worked pretty well, would suggest you do that and use a tweaked version of the glass shader for the bottle.
There are just a couple of things to sort out and this will look cool.

About the lable...

Is it really so hard to take a short time to create your own lable?

Unless your showing a close up it doesn`t have to be greatly detailed and as someone suggested about rotating the bottle so that you see more of the roundness of he bottle rather than the lable, you wouldnt have to create the whole lable unless your going to show the scene from different angles.
