hards to say why they flicker off would need to se the scene.
to optimize renders. Turn off doublesidedness of objects that dont need it (its on by default), render only mid dist maps if you cant get away with doing the bias. dont raytrace too much, filtter tecxtures right, use 2d motionblur instead of 3d.
avoid pointlight with shadows (they generate 6 ones), or then disable some of the directions if need be. Drop all objects form shadowcasting status that doen contribute to the effect.
consider baking down some or all of the shading network especialy for far away objects.
To reuse dpethmaps set the disk based depthmaps to reuse exsisting (uder light properties), not ethis only works in batch render!
