Sub-d's and polygons...?

my instructor is sure that nurbs will be replaced by sub'd's soon, yet i constantly see people complaining about the speed of the beast in question. i thought the idea was to model in sub'd's (giving you those nice organic shapes while giving you the ease of polygon mode extruding) then when you're nearly finished convert the model (in standard mode) to hi-poly's. seems to work for me so far - any thoughts?

thanks

Sub-d's defiantely ahve their advatanges the only thing that Nurbs has over them is automatic paramteric textur emapping .. if they could get that into the mix there's be no going back.

Personally I prefer to work with a poly cage and then skip sub-d's alltogether and just use a smooth poly proxy to create my hi-poly output.

Optimally though you'd want to render using the sub-d surface but there are still limitations and they are sluggish and I the tools for manipulating them directly are sparse.
