Sun With Solar Flares

Hello,

I am trying to create a sun that looks much like some of the filtered images of the sun from NASA.

My goal is to have the solar flares animate like in this video with the overall sun looking like this.

I found a great walkthrough here that even comes with a project file, but that is for Max.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Looking at your example clip, it almost looks as if you could get away with some animated geometry with animated textures...
