Syflex - Maya Cloth

Hi all,

I'm going to start using cloth and I just wanted some insight. What do people think, should I spend the time to learn Maya cloth, or should I invest my time into syflex or maybe both? And if both which one do you believe I should learn first. I hear Syflex is easier to learn should I start with that, and then move on to maya cloth?

depends on Your needs. i'd learn Syflex first, since afaik its based on Maya's softbodies, thus may work/solve quicker. unfortunately I have already familiar with Cloth and what I say - this is a pain in ass, avoid it as You can. nevertheless it gives a good results in cost of long times wasted on recalculating - in fact You even can't use a Calculator on computer while simulating Cloth - Maya should be OnTop and active, otherwise all dragControls are ignored, and there are also some other things that makes Cloth user-hostile.

if you're still wondering - let me put your mind at ease. Use Syflex. I repeat. Use Syflex. One more time? Use Syflex.

You model a REGULAR polygonal object, you click like 3 buttons, and you have your cloth sim. Yes you have to adjust properties if you want to be precise, but it's a breeze. Their wind algorithm is awesome. A 3-year old could use this thing.

Also if you are using it outside of production, email syflex and ask them if they can accomodate some sort of price for you. I did that and they offered the student price, even though I'm not a student - $200 instead of $2000.

Interesting didnt know about the batch thing. I just find Maya cloth's basic method of sewing panels together really tedious, but certainly for a long production batch simming would be invaluable.

I also heard that Maya cloth's mesh organization creates slightly better folding at equivalent mesh resolution... a friend artist of mine usually creates a couple of panels with maya cloth, and then uses that as the base to model his clothing, which he simulates with syflex... strange hybrid approach but seems to yield good results.

If you have someone to build the panels and cloth objects maya is ok. In my opinion, Syflex is exponentially more stable and faster, and easier to troubleshoot.

okay so I have syflex and I just loaded the plugin. However when I set up the simple plane-falling-over-a-ball scene, the plane does not react in any way. It's just standing there. I checked the hypergraph, and the plane is connected to the syflex solver and the gravity nodes. I made sure to click on the sycloth node and not the geometry when connecting to the fields to the solver. Any help on how to make my cloth...go? Thanks a ton in advance!
