Symmetry map? help please

I am trying to figure out how the symmetry map works but maybe I'm not using it for what it was created. I am assuming that if I have a symmetrical character, lets say a man for example, I can modify my envelope weights for certain bones and the opposite bone would get equally weighted in the opposite points of my model, am I right? maybe not at all. I followed the help but it just explains how to apply and set up rules wich i allready did but any changes i make in the right side of my enveloping does not reflect in the left part of my character. I'm I doing something wrong? or this tool is not intended for this kind of job?

Many thanks in advance....
P.D. I also posted this same topic in the general forum since I don't know where it fits best, sorry about that.

this should work...

after enveloping you have to assign a symmetry-map;
-deform/envelope-create symmetry mapping template,
than change the weight you like on one side ,
now mirror the weight and maybe this was the proplem because the weight will not automaticly update, so
you have to tag the points with the final weightning and then use mirror weights (deform/envelope/ mirror weights )

did this work?!

Yes wavo that was exacttly it hehe MANY many thanks
