You shouldn't need one for a poly model.. texture reference objects are best used for nurbs patch models or anytime you are using a projected or 3d rtextur eon a surface that is being deformed. Since Polys have UV projection you would not need to project you texture map..as it allready is by the UV's.
I'm pretty sure that currently you UV projection was not placed before the deformer. You can check by selecting th emodel and then right clicking so that you get the marking menu. then choose inputs>all inputs and you get a windows that show the various nodes and if the UV projection is at the top before the skin cluster you will have this problem.
You will need to delete this projection and reapply it with the place before deformers option in the UV projection options.
