Texturing fluids with file-texture

Hi, Dear Fluid Forum.

I thought it was possible to "deform" a file-texture using fluids.

But I cannot fint out how to do it. I want, lets say, a 2D container to be colored by a file-texture (picture or moviefile), and then the simulation of density, temp. and fuel and velocity deforms the pixels in the picture.

Best regards, T.

Use the import option on the paint fluids tool. You can set the density and color( or any other grid attributes )using an image file.

Thank you for your reply.

I have tried the import-option under attribute map, but nothing happens (reassign mapvalues checked and unchecked). I also tried to flood density, density and color and just color with the iff-file loaded. But the file seems to have no effect.

Ive also tried to browse for a file, and then paint/flood with that.

I cannot understand how to "texture" the fluid with an image, and then see it deform according to the fluid equations.

Is there something I need to do in the shading/texturing tab? Should color be set to dynamic grid or shadingcolor? Etc.?

Thanks again, T.

Ok.. a thing that is confusing is that on import the values in the image are mapped into the range defined by min/max value in the paint attributes block of the paint fluids tool( this is actual standard artisan behavior ).
Here is a quick workflow to set both the density and color from an image on a 2D fluid.
Create a 2D fluid container.
Go into shaded display mode
Add Contents->paintFluidsTool...
Paintable Attributes = Density
min/max value = 0, 1
Attribute maps->import (load your image)
Paintable Attributes = Color
import your image again
Go out of the paint fluids tool, say by clicking on the select icon(this puts the fluids display in as render mode).
hit playback to see the animation.

Thanks again, I tried to do exactly as you said, but still the fluid renders black.

Do I need to flood or paint after the map is loaded?

I have notised elsewhere (texturing) that not all jpg files does work, but I have tried both iff, jpg and tga with the import-option.

Hmm...

Best regards, T

Hi, I got it to work, I had to install maya anew.

Maybe it had to do with the fact that there were traces of maya 4.0 left on the PC? Something with the env.-file perhaps?

I guess, the resolution of the fluid should be the same as the images, for best result?

Thanks, T.

"I guess, the resolution of the fluid should be the same as the images, for best result?"
Yes, or some integer multiple of the resolution.
