Thicken wireframe display

hi all

sorry for this newbie question, but its really buggin me.

when i am displaying an object as shaded with wireframe, can i increase the thickness of the wireframe to stop it intersecting so much with the shaded object, its a bit of a headache when it comes to selecting edges etc.

I haven't seen a way to thicken wireframes but I'd like a way to make them single-sided (depending on the polygon/NURBs visible surface); it's annoying working in wireframe mode.
