Toon rendering (previous post disappeared)

Hi,

well i was going to reply to someone who had replied to my post about the toon rendering problems i've been having, but my post seems to have disappeared.

Sorry i can't remember who it was who replied but yes i had the toon camera lens shader applied before applying the toon materials. The specific object which isn't affected by the toon shader is a mulit-nurbs surface assembled into one.

Does the toon shader not like nurbs surfaces with sub-sufraces or something? Anyone know a solution around this so that i can get similar effects to the toon-assistant shader in soft3D? I've tried exporting my scene into 3D but it doesn't seem to like it much and just dies

also does anyone know wether or not the toon shader available to download on this website is better than the standard one?

The toon shaders in XSI v1.x are a direct port from Softimage|3D. The toon presets available on this site are presets to those shaders to make them easier to manage.

In XSI v2.0, the toon shaders have been rewritten from scratch to be more efficient, easier to use, and with more options.

So which version of XSI are you working with so we can help you out?

I'm working with 1.5 I've sorted out the problem with the object not being affected. It was because i had to assign the toon material before assembling the surface mesh

But there's another problem I can't seem to get any shadows in my renderings i.e. the colour remains constant even in places where there should be shadows ??

I don't think it's my lighting as it looks fine just rendered bog standard.

Open the rendertree and verify the toon_material shader is plugged into the "shadow" port of the base material (or else you won't see shadows).

The other option to check out is if "global ambience" is active in the toon_material shader's PPG. You may want to set the associated "shadows only" option to isolate ambience to the shadowed side of your objects.

yeah i checked the rendertree and the toon_material node is connected to the material shadow.
Also global ambience is off in the ppg.

Just to clarify my problem, it's the objects themselves which are not producing shadows. For example i tested the toon shader on a primitive grid, cube and sphere. Then used one spot light to light the scene pointing diagonally down toward the objects.
There were some shadows on the cube and sphere but not on the grid. Therefore you couldn't tell if the cube or sphere was on the grid or above it.

I'm probably missing out something really obvious but i just can't think of what it ccould be
