We separate objects in a shot by assigning each object a matte R G or B shader. Then in comp (Shake) we use a reorder node to create a mask for each of these three colors. Is there a way to use more colors than just R, G, and B?
Currently we render multiple mask passes because we can only separate three objects at a time using R, G, and B. I am looking for a solution that allows us to separate all the objects in the scene with one render pass - a shot can contain twenty or more objects to separate.
We have tried to use the "replace color" node, along with other techniques in Shake, but with all of these approaches the aliasing is unacceptable. We also need a solution that works with motion blur.
The answer could lie in RenderMan AOVs. Does anyone know what the most efficient way to implement this would be?
We use RenderMan, Maya, Turtle, MentalRay, and Shake
Any ideas other than AOVs?
