Alse there aren't any movie formats.
Theres just no movie formats for mental ray period.
Thing is you should never ever render out to movie formats. There are several reasons for this but basically you don't want the most costly part of your pipe to get screwed up by the most unpredictable part of your pipe.*
you have a misunderstanding the multiframe option IS ONLY for movie options choose any of the naming conventions with # in their name. So yes you can render out movies as multiple frames just not as movie files because quite frankly you'd never want to do so and thus mr doesn't provide you with the option.
- Its just bad. The longer but not complete list of reasons is:
- No multiple renders on farms this way
- When you crash (note: its not if) you loose all thats been done so far
- Your compression settings may be off, so youd end up rerendering to fix it. Since render usually takes more time than compression had you rendered out frames you'd done 10-100 test compressions during the render time
- Its easier to manage garaged frames if they are separate files
- Data can be easily partitioned
- You can render in much richer bit depth formats
- Comp apps can spread the process to multiple machines without needing to read all frames.
- Individual frames are easier to retouch
- You have wider range of options at your disposal
- No compression on compression, if you choose a suitable format.
- It wastes memory (its not like you have memory to spare, I have 16 Gigs of it ans still sometimes its not enough)
- This is something that WILL make or fail studios so don't take my word for it. You can also learn it the REALLY hard way.
- Theres hardly any benefit of doing the compressed one directly. You can allways launch your compressor in the post render script, and delete teh originals once your sure you are done with no more work.
