ok....I got around $1000 to spend on a video card
which would you recommend?
thanks!!!!
wildcat 2 5000fire GL2Gloria 3
any of those should serve you well and come in under a grand . id go with the gloria 3 on that budget and spend the rest on some more ram (gloria 3 DDC can be found for about 670 bucks if you use pricewatch.com, the wildcat 2 5000 for 770 and the fire gl2 for 750).
as stated before.. LOVE my GLORIA DCC card.. works awsome with Maya to say the elest.. that my vote..www.elsa.com
by the way..the Gloria 3 and the DCC are NOT the same card.the DCC is faster based on a new chipset , and is approved to work with highend applications..
..........KA-POW !......
i saw a visiontek quadro2 pro 64 mb for $280 on pricewatch.com.Same card as the elsa gloria III,but $500 cheaper.
but a standard quadro 2 isnt as hot as a DDC is it?
FireGL 2 - single displayFireGL 3 - duallOr save some more (about $1600) and buy FireGL 4 (better then Wildcat5110)
In terms of 2D performance, that is working with compositing programs which do not use wireframes and vertices, do you think the DCC will perform as well as WC and GL4? They both seem to be optimized for lights/wireframes while DCC seems to be optimized for pushing textures around, so maybe it will suffice with Combustion (which also has opengl accel for 3D transforms and 2D particle system).
GeForce3 500Ti SoftQuadro-ed to DCC will set you back about $300 so you could pocket the $$ or buy more RAM, faster CPU, etc. You could even go as low as about $150 with a 200Ti.If you really want to save you could get a GeForce2 Ti and SoftQuadro it to Quadro2 Pro for under $100.
Cool! Where do I find this "SoftQuadro DCC". And which GeForce would I get if I wanted Quadro-DCC software features with Quadro2Pro specs?

You either get a GF3 and run it as DCC or get a GF2 and run it as Quadro2 Pro. The Quadro2 Pro runs a little faster than a GF2 Ti and a little slower than a GF2 Ultra.
I'm still skeptical about an nvidia card...compared to like a fireGl2...The quadro's just seem to me like a pumped up game card, since some of the specs I've seen rate the ti 500's more powerfull than the dcc's when the ti's are a couple hundred dollars less!?!..Would a ti 500 be pretty good to run maya4 on xp...or should I go with a GL2....
It might be more accurate to call the GeForce a disabled OpenGL workstation card. While they aren't the MOST powerful things out there they are the best buy. The 500Ti does have higher specs than the DCC so the assumption is that if you SoftQuadro a 500Ti it should slightly outperform a DCC. If you run 500Ti straight out of the box without SoftQuadro the DCC will outperform it. SoftQuadro modifies the drivers to activate the pro hardware features that are present on all the GF cards.
I haven't used a GL2 but the people I've talked to say the Quadro2 Pro and DCC are generally better cards than the GL2. The GL4 may be a different story but those cost around $2000.
I think I will get one Geforce3 TI500. But there are so many brands out there with this chip, which one should I go for? Thanks for any suggestion!
I've read several places that Leadtek has made some hardware improvements that have increased the visual quality above that of other GF3 cards. People have reported that the visuals are as good as a Matrox.
