Water In A Pipe

I would like to get some input from the experts. I am creating a animation that shows water being pulled up from a pit into a pump through a tube. I know this can be done using blobby surfaces or realflow or Glu3D or Maya Fluids, but I would rather not use these approaches. What I am looking for is a simpler way to represent the liquid level rising in the tube. I really don't want to complicate the issue by using particles (even though that would probably look the most realistic). Just looking for some thoughts on a simple and effective technique.

Perhaps you could create an animated boolean and use an animated 3d texture as bump map for the water look...
