i did a simple character.

i did a standard rig from the xsi guide rig. then i enveloped the character's objects to the rig. now i want to adjust the weight by painting. which works fine normally. but this time, if i want to erase weight, nothing happens. "erase" adds weight to unweighted points though, very strange. adding weight paint mode works fine.
if i erase weight in the editor it works. lets say i pick a vertex and erase its weight in the editor, then i pick the erase paint mode and scrub over the erased vertex, it adds weight instead of erasing it so that the vert is at 100% again, really strange.
i did a simple chain and a box as envelope to test xsi's behaviour. in this simple experiment everything worked fine, i could erase and add weight to verts.
another thing i notice. if i add weight, which works, i can erase that added weight. but only from verts that had no weight and were weighted by me.
seems like the automatically added weight is locked or something and can't be erased. may this be possible? and if so, where can i change that?
i just figured out that if i load the basic man model and envelope it to the standard biped rig, it's the same behaviour. i can't totally erase weights from verts. the automatic weighting is fixed and i can just add weight, not erase it.
where can i change that behaviour?
