Yes well through out this period I'd expect you be developing your reel and resume and making contacts and then apply for actual jobs. What is expected is competency, ability to take direction and to produce the work in the time allotted. These are relevant no matter what you want to specialize in.
There is a lot of competition for animator positions so your work needs to be good. You also have to consider the issue of is there work near where you live. Will you have to apply for visas to get work outside of your country etc.
