I have tested Maya on Suse and Redhat Enterprise Linux and Fedora Core and I think Redhat Enterprise is more faster and reliable than other linux distributions for Maya and XSI.

CentOS is a recompile of Red Hat Enterprise; try it if you are evaluating distributions.

Autodesk certified Maya to run on Novell's SLED/OpenSUSE and Red Hat's RHEL/Fedora Linux. Both are RPM based distributions that have same directories for installing applications, etc. Both SLED and RHEL are for Enterprise set-ups such as in a studio setting and come with technical support. Where as with OpenSUSE and Fedora Linux which are free you're relying on community support for technical issues unless you have your own I.T. Tech Support staff. Currently I run Maya 8.5 on OpenSUSE 10.2 with Gnome as my desktop. i run maya with ubuntu linux without problems. Runs also good on Debian, but Debian is not easy to use.

I've been running Maya 7.0 for a while now on Ubuntu. There is a few issues regarding the GUI. I'm upgrading to 8.5 in a few months or so, and I'm hoping that'll fix those problems. That being said, the main functionality seems to be working fine.

I converted the RPM's with the "alien" application to make them installable on Ubuntu.

I think Redhat is the preferred Linux. But, IMO, Ubuntu will be the easiest to use.

Taken into consideration that you have to manually convert the .rpm's to .deb with Alien, and a couple of other issues, I would say Suse or RedHat's enterprise desktops are far easier.
