Why are my Reference Objects blue?

Take a look at the attached JPEG of a Maya scene with a referenced object in it.

Why has it suddenly decided to turn blue in shaded mode? It's OK in wireframe and weirdly enough displays OK when you 'box-select' it but not when you 'click-select' it.

The blue referenced obkect does not render either.

What's going on? I know it isn't a graphics card issue because I've got an identical scene which is working perfectly.

Wierd indeed, id say your object got disconected from its shader by accident, or well it would have if it was green...

Could you post this file (or prthaps a parrt of it?, so that we can study it more closley)

Here is some more info which may help to decipher the problem.

I've since discovered that the objects which turn Blue are in fact References of References. What on Earth does this mean?

Well the scene snapshot I've attached above is Referencing a Study scene and a character. HOWEVER the study itself is referencing the file with the desk in it. So in effect that blue desk's actual file is two reference jumps away.

Am I getting closer to the problem?

Maybe if I'm still none-the-wiser in a few days I'll post the scene files but for now I'm happy with suggestions
