Wildcat 5110 and DVD

I've been thinking about upgrading my decidedly middle-end workstation, and want to put the Wildcat 5110 in it.

I'm thinking about getting a Dell workstation mainly because I am lazy and don't want to try and figure out how to build the system myself. One thing about their configuration page for this workstation is it notes that the DVD player won't work with the Wildcat 5110.

Is this true? I just checked the 3DLabs site, scoured Usenet, searched the web and looked through Highend3D without finding anything definite.

Does anybody know anything about this? Does anyone have a 5110 in their system with a DVD player?

If they say it won't work, it won't. Why wouldn't they want to sell you both? It might not blow up or anything, but chances are there is a space problem, power cosumption issue, or heat problem.

I would talk to Dell or Intense3D. See what the real issue is. If perhaps it's a space problem, then maybe you can get the DVD aftermarket and chose another brand that might fit. Could you get an external DVD drive? It's more expensive, but solves your problem.

I was told by 3dlabs that their higher-end cards (like $1200 on up) do not like DVD players. I have an Oxygen GMX2000 and I know it doesn't like DVD players. I believe the only solution is to get a DVD decoder card to pass the DVD drive through directly to avoid it. I believe that was what the 3dlabs folk told me b/c software decoder and decoder on the drive itself somehow presents the problem. Don't ask me why that is just what I have found out - lol

Ya, this makes sense. If I were to get a PCI decoder card for the DVD player, I assume I would have to route the signal out to the Wildcat before it went to the monitor? Am I right?

Its a waste to have a DVD drive without a decoder card anyways. Get a Realmagic Hollywood + card.
