Set the renderer to OpenGL (OGL). This will render the image exactly as you see it in the viewports. With the new ability to force objects to be shaded/wireframe, you should be able to get the desired look. If you need to adjust the anti-aliasing quality, then click "options" in the render dialog and you'll get a set of options to tweak.
All images are written into the pic format, so no need to do a conversion.
