Workstation

hello

I am looking to build a workstation to 3d model with maya, zbrush, photoshop, and a compositing program. i am not into animation to much at this time i

mainly just render stills. however this is because i have never had a computer capible of realisticaly rendering animations so it might be something i

could get into. to be honest my computer isnt even fast enough to render still but i manage. i get around 10 minute render timeswith gi and final

gather on in a low poly scene.

I am running a 2.6 dual core athlon 64 x2
3 gigs of ram
nvidia geforce 8600 gt
and 32 bit window

I hate having to run 32 bit windows as i have a littlemore ram i could toss in here. but maya glitches out badly on 64 bit os. the viewport glitches

out and you have to manualy refresh the open gl by going from four pane to maximized one pane and back or vica versa to fix it. on 32 bit windows it

still does this but only every 10 minutes or so. on 64 bit windows it does this every 3 to 5 seconds. it isnt somthing i can work around. i have a

business were i build computer and sell them. however i build basic machines for as cheap as i can. the best computeri sell is a

amd phenom 2.2 ghz quad core processor
and xfx nforce 750i i think mobo
with 8 gigs of ram.
nvidia geforce 9500gt

and i still have the viewport glitch on this machine. now these are gaming machine and i understand that the geforce series cards are what cause this

problem. or at least that is what i have read. however even on this quad core build with 8 gigs of ram my render times are still like 6 or 7 minutes

wich is better then 10+ but still to long. i have a feeling it is the graphics card. so i wish to ask advice on a build i am an AMD man usualy but i am

willing to go to intel if i get a better machine to 3d model on. i have a few different ideas on a build they are as follows

Intel DX58SO Motherboard - LGA 1366, Intel X58, SATA, CrossFireX Ready, Triple Channel DDR3 support, RAID, Hyperthreading support $259.99

Or would a board like the Intel D5400XS Motherboard - Intel 5400, Dual Socket 771 609.99 be better. this one has the ddr2 memory but supports 2

processors. i am at a loss of which to choose here.

as far as processors go, would amd and an amd board be better. or should i go with a intel core 2 extreme, or an amd phenom, or the core i7, or what

about the intel xeon and the appropriate mobos to fit those sockets.

Heres another mobo by asus which is good Asus Rampage II Extreme Motherboard & Ultra X3 1600W PSU - LGA 1366 SLI/CrossFireX, Triple Channel DDR3, RAID,
however im undecicive as this looks like more of a gaming board.

as well looking at processor the socket 771 core 2 extreme is like 1600 bucks. i cant afford that i got about 3k to spend on this machine.

should i go with 8 gigs of ram? would that be sufficient, i am wondering what i should get cause as i said the computer i got that i built to sell has a

quad core processor and 8 gigs of ram and is still slow as hell on the renders. i feel that is most likely the graphics card.

I plan on getting one of the nvidia quadro cards however i do not know wich one. i was looking at one in around the 400 dollar range hopefully. allso

should i worry bought getting a board that supports 2 way sli? i know it would be nice to have two graphics cards, but is it needed?

What i would like as an end result is a decent render time say 1-2 minutes with gi and final gather on in a relativly low porlly scene. right now with

gi and final gather on in a 5k poly scene im looking at a 10 minute render time which is hard to work with. even with ipr tuning it takes forever to

even tweak one shader like i want it. it goes like this make a tweek wait 10 minutes wait i don't quite like that make a tweek wait 10 minutes and so

on. there has to be a better way, a way i can build a rig for around say 2 to 3 grand that will serve my purposes. i do not play many games. hardly at

all i tinker with a few like World of warcraft. and i do like to play a few of the new games when they first come out sometimes, but im not hard core

gamer. if i could play WoW on this machine and watch .avi file of tv shows i d/l, surf the web, and be proficient in maya and zbrush i would be just

rediculously thrilled. if it came right too it i wouldnt mind keeping the maching i have now for the WoW tv shows, and web. and build this rig stricly

for maya. however it would be nice to have it all in one package and i do not see why i couldnt ) i'd appretiate any advice you can throw my way

Thanks for having the forum in the first place

This si related to the inadequacy of the graphics card itself. Get a deecent gffx card. YEs it costs monay but how much exactly do the annoyances cost you?

Well to be honest if you can not buy one of the following

3700
3800
4800
5800

or maybe meybe 1800 then i would refrain form buying alltogether.
