I might use Ncloth in 8.5, and a radial feild set to a negative value (-30 no attenuation) that encompasses the paper object (polymesh), this will crumplie the paper. Then, I might extract the beginning and ending shapes (or any frame that you like) and create a couple blend shapes, then animate the blendshape. This will keep the paper animation kind of rigid like paper, and not like cloth.
