We'll I think its already been established that xp just sucks and win2k runs over it in everything. I don't know you guys but I just recently purchased winxp, so I dont wantt o just throw it away.. but xp just seems so slow.... is there any new updates for xp for graphic purposes? Theres got to be a way to boost this thing up... it cant be another windows failure....... like winME.
I have worked with XP quite a lot and prefer it. Many things on this message board have been established as "sucking" because that's a pretty safe position to stand behind.
Now, you wanna try a really, really slow OS, check out Mac OS X. I think it's great too, but since 2ghz G4s still aren't available, it's a wait and see for that one.
Same speed fluster happened with OS/2, NT 3.5, and NT 4 upon their release, Windows 2000 too.
Use the best OS for your class of machine and don't bite the upgrade bug, put him in formaldehyde for a while if you've caught him already.

Well i have a amd 1200 mhz with 1 gig ram and quadro 2 in my machine... and i can notice the difference when im doing Highload work... you can tell the diff between 2k and xp.. and im wondering if thers a way to boost some speed in xp
I'm lmao because it's all true!!
;>
well i messed with XP too, and it proved to be a waste of time, i dont know if it sucks or not, but i went back to 2000 the following week. if you want to speed it up, make sure to turn off all the extra skins, set EVERYTHING to classic windows style, this should save you on the resources that god awful UI demands. make sure to disable all the cutesy thumbnail garbage (we got fcheck right?). other than that, your machine sound perfectly capable of running XP. i have a friend that swears by XP (he's completely nuts mind you), and might have a few tricks to speed things up, infact he's running a system very similar to yours (amd 1.2, 768MB RAM and a geforce3). ill see if i can get him to post some XP speed tips.
GREAT!! thanks because this xp slowness crap is becoming unbearable.. i swore i was gonna buy another machine.. until i found out that its just xp.... its fine.. only when i start doing heavy stuff do i notice the difference.
I've notice I've sent in like 12-14 error reportings to MS in the two weeks i've had XP on this machine due to programs crashing, locking up, etc
I also notice that after looking at a bunch of movie files in media player, it just stops working. Double click the file ......... nothing. Rebooting fixes this though - good thing reboots are somewhat fast, but this isn't cool and not production worthy IMO.
Fair enough, it's a philosophical point to wonder if we ever render faster when you talk to old 3d guys and they prattle on about their great frame buffers and fortran compilers, but I digress.
The XP-2000 speed difference only bothers me on a 200mhz poker that I use for a home net server, but it's got a little firewall, so what the heck. I use the Windows Classic Style and it seems to speed up things.
For any machine with 512mb or better of RAM it would be best to select System cache radio button in Performance Options of the System Control Panel.
There are also some registry tweaks available that may help speed about as much as those giant mufflers on tricked-out Hondas.
After the 24-bit interface is gone, the differences between XP and 2000 are arguable. It's more stable on my systems, maybe not yours. It may be more compatible overall, but not with high-end software. It launches apps and boots faster, but there's some sludge in there somewhere.
I have noticed that XP doesn't like to lower the pagefile size below its 1.5x minimum. Don't know if that's a "bug or a feature."
Get Windows Updates automatically and you won't have to apologize to all your friends for your part in the latest badtrans outbreak. For speed concerns though, company-issued driver updates are the thing, MS drivers center on stability.

well not neccessarily render at all times.. but even during photoshop work where I have a task running and it will take significantly longer than 2k... Sometimes I wonder my HD is really runnning at ATA 100 speed... Because xp loaded its own drivers for that.. there are little slow downs here aand there all over the place..
deffinatley load the manufactures drivers man.
