XSI Lagginess

I'm using XSI and the interface seems to be VERY laggy. For instance, when I bring up the render options, it takes at least 10 seconds for the window to come up. If I change ANY parameter in the render options, there is a 3 - 5 second pause before I can do anything in the program.

This lagginess is present throughout my entire workflow, sometimes when I'm selecting new objects, VERY often when I'm using the navigate tool to pan, orbit and dolly a perspective camera.

I am using XSI on a 1.7 gHz P4... the only possible thing I think it could be is the video card (16mb ATI Rage 128 Ultra), though the interaction with geometry is fine and smooth once it gets past the initial lag.

Is this normal?

That's certainly not normal. I hope someone else here can help you, but your video card is certainly not good enough IMHO. If you're poor, pick up a used Geforce2 off of Ebay and softquadro it. That'll give you a decent and extremely cheap solution.

will the softquadro driver work on a geforceDDR card?

right now im using the latest detonator drives and they dont do very well for 3d.. great for games.. but not xsi.

any ideas?

Any chance you're working over a windows network? We've also expreienced slowdowns and have linked it to using UNC names for paths.

So if you have images sources or rotoscope sources that say //compname/directory as opposed to simply c:/directory this can lead to huge slowdowns as windows resolves the pathnames.

Incidentally, using direct drivemapping instead of UNC paths, while faster for interactivity, can lead to problems with missing sources/files come render time. =(

Seems like sometimes you just can't win with windows.
