Zombie!!

Hi guys,

This zombie here is gonna appear in my demo reel. He's not finished yet, I'd like to work on the eyes, and I also wanna create the inner mouth and teeths. Zombie was all created in Maya and I used PaintFX for the hair... but I don't know if I'm going to use that for the animation as I'd like the hair to react to the movement of the head. Any thought ?

hi, yea...no offense but i think you need to spend a little more time on the model and the texturing....go check out tutorials. steven salhberg's are exelent...just make the model, better.

good luck dood,

Toby

Thanks for the critics, I have a question though: I'm using 3D Paint FX tool to create a texture on this head but this tool is weird; the way the texture is painted on the head, it seems to stretch itself all the time. I don't know what causes this.... and the red circle that is used as a feedback of my brush is oval shaped rather than round at some place on the surface, especially around the mouth area. Any suggestions ? I don't know how to prevent the stretching of my texture when using 3D Paint FX....

Re Paint Effects. THere are some seroius problems with using paint effects in a production environment, the main one being that they only work with default light - you cannot light-link which if you're working on a big scene makes them virtually useless. Hope this info proves useful. By the way with the limited number of hairs you appear to have on your model why not just model them then you can add proper dynamics to taste. Good luck

First off, good job! I would like to add a few comments,.
1> If this is a human Zombie, then that should reflect in your model...such as a human skull underneath the model should add feature to the skin, and the proportions of the head should reflect this.
2> Look at some dead humans, as sick as this might be it would add some realistic qualities to your final product.
3> For a zombie I would add more rotting flesh, not just discoloration.

Hope this helps, not that I could do better at this point, as we are all students in this forum. Keep up the good work.

It could be a Gray Alien zombie!

It look like I felt on my way home from the subway today when nature called rather persistently.

Seriously, the face would benefit from some extra tweaking, it looks to much like you have created it fully with artisan. The texturing looks good though.

I'll be frank with you guys, I called it Zombie because It's doesn't really look that healthy I didn't want it to look human at all, especially if you look at the size of the eyes, and the fact that the face is kinda elongated and skinny.
I was more trying to create something sick, rotting, and something unearthly, and the face was inspired from the fake area 52 alien movie, you know, the one getting dissected on a table....
Another thing, I don't really wanna push the level detail that much, as this one is gonna get animated and is not gonna get used for a long shot.
But I will add details, yeah. I'm creating the mouth right now, and I also created 2 Blend Shape today. I'll post more stuff about this shot soon. Thanks for the critics !

The model really need a lot of more work, so do the textures.
But the main design is ok. And it really looks kind of dead an zomie-like...

I think that you should work a little harder on your images before posting them here.

Very interesting look - I congratulate you on your originality which is lacking in most 3d art. Go with this style and develop it - judging by the image and its creativity I think you know what to listen to on these replies and what you can write off as sheep following. Best of luck I hope to see more of your work - this image is a credit to anyone struggling with the Q of who is making the art - comp or the user. It is obvious that there is a user that created this image. Can you feel it?????

I whole Heartily 100% disagree with Johannes, he may forget that the section he is in is the STUDENT section, as in "NOT a bad ass yet" section.

Now i know a person posting work here is up to a critic but, you offer no critic at all, just trashed on his stuff. If your going to trash leave some advice behind.

Hey Johanes....

I might not be up to "your" standards, but I didn't post in the PRO section... didn't you notice the
"Critique My Work - For Students" section ? And you didn't even try to critique like everyone else here.
You got a very bad aptitude probem....

Hi
You need too work a bit with the model and texturing...do this.
1) Take care more of the area around the eyes, like eyelid and wrinkles under the eyes. Now it looks like the eyes are just two balls inserted to the head.
2) It looks like u have shaded the model with a phong E, with lots of witheness, use a blinn and adjust spec roll off and eccentricity instead.
3)Make a bump map with a scanned piece of your skin and tile it, paint wrinkle by hand using photoshop.
4)Make a spec map and use the lightes values on lips, nose and fore head.

The color balance is good though.

I kinda like the look. It's not quite there, but it's growing a look. I think you just need to address the things that are screaming CG in it, and you're good to go. Some things I see:

  • Obviously the texture stretching needs to be sorted out, but there's also some weird aliasing in there. In the stretching bits on the neck you can see some clear stair stepping that's gotta go.

  • The model is nice and smooth, almost a paint stroke, but the interface between the skin and the eyes is jarring. You want to create a small lip there to hold the eyes into the model. It doesn't have to be anything big, just a small fold of skin at the very rims of the eyes.

  • There is no shadow inside the mouth, so the opening isn't very defined. If that area in there were black it's look a world better. Nice paint work on those lips though.

It's good to see art on these boards. I think your zombie is very good. It is very unique and holds together nicely. Only thing I would change is make the eyes and head flow together better. Textures are good, some tweeking could be good.

All of the critics that you got at first are junk.It is clear to most that you weren't trying to make a realistic person.
Thank you for not making another stupid robot.

Chances are the poster of this picture will be too scared to post ever again on this site, which is a shame. I have to admit, while the model does not show any extreme mastery of 3d modelling, I realy think that it has a cool artistic feel. The number ONE thing that stands out for me is the eyes. If you put in a decent cavity (eye orbit), I think this could be a model with a very good feel. Once you have the body complete, I would like it if you would re-post (Under a new thread) for a second evaluation. I think the critique you have recieved thus far would be similar if you were to only show a head shot of REN from Ren and Stimpy. I doubt if anyone here would have given THAT good critique either if it never made it so far as it did, yet the STYLE of the show is what rose it to such a high level of popularity. Dont let ANY critique ever get you down. I take some for what its worth, and the rest I dismiss.

In short, keep it up, I like it. I'll bet John Lasseter's first 3d model wasn't [censored] hot either. Hehehe.

Mike R

P.S. Mr. Lasseter, if you are reading this, I apologize, you are my god. Please hire me.

Well... At least he posted it in the right section! Come on guys, I though we're meant to help each other as fellow students.

Its hard to criticize this based on art because art is so vague and people opinion differ. I don't know whether you intend this to be realistic or stylised... so I can only comment based on technical perspective.

IMHO, the modeling needs a lot of work, did u use nurbs to make this? If yes, try increasing the isoparms to make the skull more defined, especially around the eye socket. With this type of model its hard to give it a sense of character (maybe you intend it that way) because there is no pupil and when you animate it later, the eyes will be stationary and u cannot rotate the eyeball like all good zombie should.

as for the texture, it doesn't add to the scaryness of the model. Its too bright and shiny. Try decreasing the specularity or play with the light setup. If you use Maya, then try using Area light to make the specular highlights more realistic.

I'd say this is better than my first model I did in Maya 1
If you post this 2 years ago you would get alot of positive comments but technology is changing so quickly and so is the expectation. I'd say a lot of people here are expecting to see realistic human head.

well thats my two cents

Like to hear from you

I am adding my crappy thoughts to this mostly senseless thread.

I think Electronic Outlaw had his points anyway (though he went bit out of line). I myself enjoy much more getting hard critics than ten "oh - I like your pic very much!" -ones.
People should be ready to accept hard critiques. Even if it doesn't feel nice it is the best option.

Simply saing something is bad - on the other hand - doesn't really help much.
But you should be able to say that instead of posting here one should be doing basic excercises and contribute more thoughts to their work. (sometimes "forget it and start over IS the correct answer no matter how hard it feels and how unpolite it may sound)

Some people found the zombie nice and interesting. It looks like anyone's first NURBS failure (now strongly pointing out that no offence meant)

and here is why:
1. the grainy and weirdly aliasing textures that don't really have any detail or colors to support the form. The texture also stretches badly and is quite a disaster around the mouth. Far too much bump values I guess.
2. very simple model that shows greases that seem to follow the simplest circular isoparm directions. The wrinkles in the chin etc.
3. No modeled shape contrasts - everything is similarily smooth (more or less)
4. The kind of soft or overly smooth inward shape to host the eyes. This looks like the reason is just inexperience. Take a challenge and try to make some kind of lid structure. Now the eyes look like marble balls stuck to clay.

In general instead of trying to add everything (paint effects, animation etc.) concentrate in one specific area e.g. modeling and get basic skills there then go on.

Are you really going to work on this one to be a project?
People shouldn't post every one evening excercise that they will anyway leave behind. Everyone has done their crappy first stuff, but if you really are not looking for critiques on some special topic don't post. use your time on practicing.

Definitely no hard feelings meant.

Hey again
I must say I agree with the above speaker on the subject wether to critque hard and be humorous.
One must accept some insults and personal attacks if posted on a public board....and its FUN.
If some retard is unpolite then just ignore it or evan better write back and comment the birdbrain fo the writer.

animating paint effects look under the rendering options within maya the paint effects-brush animation-make brush spring. fiddle with the setings and itll work.
i think the model is great and i really like the textures around the mouth, it looks quite cartoony. there is just a bit of stretching around the back and sides of the head. like to see you animate it. cool. jake

this post is over a year old. please, please, stop rooting through the garbage.
