Maya is being ported to OSX

We'll I'll be damned.

Little has spurred such heated debate as this much-debated topic. - And I, for one, am now forced to eat my words.

So here goes........

I hate it when I'm wrong (but I'm glad that the MAC-idiot-savonts will get their turn on our much-loved software)

Why do I also have to be insulted while you eat words that were obviously ill advised in the first place?

you're right - that's a jerky thing to say.

I was just trying to make light of the earlier banterings between MAC and PC users. Some of my best friends are MAC...ehhem...users.

MAC users like the simplicity of the workspace. NT users like the flexibilty of theirs'. I'm a PC guy, myself.

It really makes no difference to me as long as people are happy doing what they do, and put out quality work.

Let's be friends.....

That's cool. I'm a little disappointed I couldn't start a flamin' fistfight with my first post here, but we'll get off to an even worse start next time...
I just have to add; being a Mac hand and now with an NT/Maya box too, and (of course!)still liking the Mac more, I have tried to determine what it is about a Mac that is better;.... "Not much" is the short answer. But I KNOW it better, which is a result of it being the first for me. Too many people fail to recognize that it is just a simple as that.
But everyone loves a fight, and where's the harm in this one? Go....Mac!

This is fantastic news as far as I'm concerned. An OSX port with some strategic marketing might very well make Maya the Photoshop of the 3D world (and maybe push Alias into the profit zone for the first time). Man,I still can't believe software as sweet as this is not making money!

Wonderful News. I work on Maya Irix & NT Systems since the beginning and of course I am very satisfied with both Systems but I really would prefer to use my Maya Liz. on MacOS. If you do lot of QuickTime Work, MacOS is still better (more soft, easy exchange... It is also great to realize how AW is listening to their customers.
For me it is not only the functionality of the soft that is important, AW runs the very best Customer Support I've ever had. I never had to wait more than 15 min. to get a usable answer from the AW Support Center. - That's really great!!!

Id like to contribute my 'Hell Yeah!' Things are very Dynamic in the Mac world right now. There have been several promising HW announcements lately (nVidia&ATi) and this is the icing on the cake.

OSX will change alot of the 'MAC...ehhem...users..' perceptions. It is flexible, powerful, and simple.

Ohhh, I just can't resist. The folks at A|W told me 4 years ago they would port their wares when Mac adopted a unix-like kernel. For all of you who doubted me...
As far as those who complain about the effort put into a port and not put into development, I did not hear you barking when they announced a port for NT. As far as incompatability issues go, geeeeee whizzzz, you'd never guess there were any issues on the fine windows platform from reading this board (lol). As far as performance, well, we got a brand new dual proc integraph zx10 and a g4 450 and the g4 makes the zx10 look slow when it comes to AE rendering.

And what is it about the Mac, it's the little things like the ability to do file directory stuff from the keyboard. It's the 3 mouse clicks instead of 5 needed for a lot of common tasks.
I will tell you though, I love the speed of my Quad 540 nt box, and I love access to a command line.

You may have read this in the hardware forum, but I feel inclined to reiterate myself...
Macs are evil demons sent to the earth by the Prince of Darkness himself, Steve Jobs. I would sooner trust a raging minotaur than Maya on Mac.
And now to answer the age old question...Yes. Macs are for simpletons.
I can't wait to manipulate my Maya views with one mouse button! Has anyone here ever had the displeasure of using on of the G# hockey pucks for longer than 45 minutes at a time? Can you say carpel tunnel?

Yes you are right, mac is for stupid people, who don't know how to use a command line. And of course a 3 button mouse is not possible (they exist of course) because the budget is already gone with the expensive G4, the extra 50 USD would kill anybody and damned him to work for the rest of his life in hell - at the feets from the Prince of Darkness. - I would like to work in Chains and damned Stevie swings his whip on my back, if I only can have a G4 and Maya that would be enough.

Awww, c'mon ppl, Your not seeing the broad picture here, Not only will OSX be on the next generation (and current) of underpowered over-hyped Macs, OSX will by ported to x86 as well.. And you must remember, OSX is based on BSD, BSD is a good thing.. IMO it could be a totaly viable alternative to Windoze, in about a year or so... I also smell a Maya on Linux annoucement commin down the pike as SGI has just released their new Intel boxes + Linux with full OpenGL.. Everyone gets Maya!

i think its a good idea for A/W to port Maya over however i think theres some issues with it
1 we have G3s and G4s at school the G3s crash alot and freeze up alot and there doesnt seem to be any reason for it somedays they dont some days they do and they said ohh well get some new G4s and thatll be the end of that well they were wrong the G4s freeze up almost as much as the G3s
2 the keyboard and mouse both WAAAAAYYYYYYYYY to small ive got good sized hands and they are both a bitch to use
my other issue is the mac os needs to mature ALOT in OS X
im sorry but the reason Maya was first ported over to NT was because its mature We have NT and SGI machines running Maya at school and let me tell you the NTs running Maya have not crashed yet which is better than the macs but in general NT 4.0 is a mature os why do you think nobody is giving it up 2000 is supposed to be better and yet every office i know of plans on staying with NT ofr a good while more ill give you mac users this 2D is the macs but fellas 3D belongs to NT (almost, not just yet, but soon it will)
Im for porting over to the Macs as long as they dont discontinue anyting else Im sorry but id hate to have to use a mac for Maya just as much as you Mac users would probably hate to use a NT box for photoshop
oh and also just so you know i just did navigate and copy and paste some files useing just my keyboard so it can be done in NT too

Its great that MAYA is comming to the Mac, it's something that I wanted for a long time. At work we use NT, SUN, and Mac. Our most productive machines are the Macs(G4s), they do Commotion, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and ElectricImage very quickly and effortlessly. Our 450MHz G4s run considerably faster than our Gigahert Pentiums.

By new years, Dual and Quad processor Macs are comming out, and since OSX is UNIX based the apps will take advantage of multi processing without additional programming. I'm excited that we decided to buy 4xcopies of MAYA and 2xnew Dual G4s.

For many years Apple has been criticized, but honestly, the biggest hardware and OS improvements in the past three years were made by Apple. To some people it's easier to criticize something than learn it, I love working with OSes, they all have certain things they do expetionally well.

SUN is an excelleny server. (It hardly, if never, acts up)
NT and IRIX are good for running one maybe two serious applications. (Once you use more, the OSes start showing  limitations)
Mac is great at running multiple applications, they all seem to work as one program. (Learn it and see)
OSX is aimed to be a UNIX with the operator advantages of the MacOS. (Checkout apple.com and click on the OSX tab)

I think I will speak for most of us who know what we are talking about when I say, I don't think so... And if they truely are slower then something is setup wrong. Of course, it totally depends on what faster means to you as well.. To me its FP and fast interaction with apps that matter..

I will give you the fact that apple has made many OS improvements..

I don't hate Macs at all, but no way in hell is the MPC7400 chip anywhere close to a Giga-PIII or Athlon, its just cold hard fact.
