Maya crash when rendering

Hi, I've just started using Maya, and having trouble in basic rendering.

As soon as I start rendering, the application crashes with the Applicaion Error dialog saying something like "Cannot write to address 0x00000000."

This happens with any kind of scene files.
Has any of you had the same problem before?

For the info, I'm using Maya4 Unlimited on HP Pavilion with AMD Duron 1.4GHz, and the default S3 Graphics ProSave display adapter.

Sounds like a file system problem.. like you are out of temp space or don't have permisions set correctly. Is this your personal system or are your working in a school lab?

Hmmm. I have about 15GB still available in my HD, so I don't think it's running out of temporary space. Also, the application is running on my personal PC, so there shouldn't be any problem with premissions.

Other thing sot try are moving your maya preferences out of your use rdirectory they may be corrupted. Do have the program set to a project that that was created by maya.. is it set to look at C:/my_project for example and is there an images directory in there?

What was the last thing you did before this problem developed? Have you installed any new software or plugins?

memory address? possible ram problem. maybe if you have more that one stick you could take them out and test them individually.

Yeah that was what I was starting to think.. wanted to get some other info from the guy first to see if he had installed some new ram recently or if this was a new system all together.

Hi. Thanks all for the replies. I just tried to re-install Maya, but the problem still persists.

It's a fresh installation, so it's not because I somehow screwed up the configuration of Maya.

My RAM is, as far as I know, perfectly fine. All other applications on my machine work fine.

I'm starting to suspect it's some kind of the incompatibity of Maya with my VideoCard.
As I've mentioned in the previous post, my video-card is a low-end one that came with my PC (HP Pavilion), called S3 Graphics ProSavage. As I've checked the AliasWavefront's website, my card is not supported by Maya. Would that be a problem?

Your video card has absolutely no impact when it comes to software rendering.
Also just because you reinstalled Maya does not mean that you cleared your preferences.

Here's the further questions I'll ask.

Did Maya work initially?
If not then did you install ram yourself or is it all factory ram?
How much ram do you have?

Actually, this is absolutely the first time I'm using Maya on my PC (i.e. I've never done any configuration changes on Maya on my PC).
So, it's not something that was working before and stopped working.

Also my PC has 512MB RAM.

Oh, and also, I got my PC last month, and I've never touched inside the box (i.e. I've never added any RAM).

There's your problem.. You need XP pro or Windows 2000 pro.. Maya isn't qualified to run on Windows XP but I have heard that it will work with Pro.

So, you can't use it with XP-HomeEdition...

Wow, it seems that, if that's the problem, you should be hearing dozens of other people complaining about the exact same problem (i.e. the program crashes when rendering) though, because I'm sure there are others who tried to use Maya on HomeEdition without knowing the software's restriction.

Well, maybe, most of people don't try using a high-end software like Maya on the a low-end system such as my PC?

It's not your PC's fault.. but Aliaswavefront has not fully tested Maya with XP. I think many windows users assume that it will run on the current OS but there are many programs that don't. In this case there's probably something about your paricular hardware and the way XP handles memeory that isn't flying right. Hard to say and if you had aliaswavefront support they tell you that there's nothing to do but get windows 2000. Is this a student license or PLE?

Actualy its works perfectly fine on both XP home and XP pro. I have it on 2 different units and they both work fine. I do notice thought that it will crsh if other apps are running that take up ram. 512 is good buthtere is better. what is your proccessor speed?

Correction it should run with Windows XP Pro but there are some known problems..

I didn't say it wouldn't run but since it's not qualified for Home it's hard to say what the problem is.
It may run with the same hardware under Windows 2000 pro or XP pro or maybe there's something wrong with his ram.

The fact that you say that Maya crashes when you try to run other apps sounds screwed up and not exactly tolerable.. I usually have Maya open with Photoshop and After Effects and several other applications with no problem.

The minimum requirement for Maya to run is 128 and you should beable to open and render a cube with as much as 512.

Again it seem like it has something to do with RAM but since it's factory installed I can only assume that it is correct.

It can still be a memory fault the default mem tests arent realy that, accurate try using some program that iterates thru all the memory banks separately! We do and youd be supprised hwo many of the offshelf memories are flawed...

Hi, I've actually tested my RAM with the RAM tester from www.simmtester.com, and it passed the test. (The test was pretty elaborate and took about 15min.)

Also, all my other applications work fine on my PC, and it doesn't seem to suggest any RAM problem.

Well other apps working well only tells you they are working well... Not that anything isnt wrong.

Ok so its not ram. Contact AW!? is the flexim up and running correctly... what network card do you have etc..

The memlocation shounds a bit wierd now that i think of it.
